If your WizzAir flight arrived more than 3 hours late, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 under EU law — regardless of how much you paid for your ticket. WizzAir is the largest low-cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe, operating millions of flights annually across the continent. EU Regulation EC 261/2004 protects passengers on delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights, and WizzAir is fully subject to these rules as a Hungarian EU-registered airline.

When Are You Entitled to WizzAir Flight Delay Compensation?

Four conditions must all be met for your claim to be valid:

1. Your flight arrived at least 3 hours late — the delay is measured at the time the aircraft doors open at the destination, not the departure time. If the plane took off late but made up time in the air, you may not qualify.

2. The flight falls under EU rules — this means either:

  • The flight departed from an EU airport (WizzAir operates from many EU hubs), OR
  • The flight arrived in the EU operated by WizzAir (an EU carrier registered in Hungary)

3. You had a confirmed, paid booking — a valid reservation in the airline's system.

4. You checked in on time — if you missed the check-in deadline, your claim is void.

Compensation is not owed if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances: severe weather, air traffic control strikes, or airspace closures. Technical failures, however, are generally not considered extraordinary circumstances by EU courts.

How Much Compensation Can You Claim?

The amounts are fixed by EC 261/2004 and depend solely on the flight distance:

Flight Distance Compensation
Up to 1,500 km €250
1,500–3,500 km €400
Over 3,500 km €600

Examples of WizzAir routes and their compensation amounts:

  • London – Warsaw (~1,450 km) → €250
  • London – Budapest (~1,450 km) → €250
  • London – Bucharest (~2,200 km) → €400
  • London – Tel Aviv (~3,600 km) → €600

The amount is fixed and does not depend on the ticket price.

How to File a WizzAir Compensation Claim — Step by Step

Step 1: Gather your documents

Before filing, prepare:

  • Flight number (e.g. W6 1234)
  • Date and route of the flight
  • Booking reference (PNR — 6 characters)
  • Names and details of all passengers claiming compensation
  • IBAN bank account number for the payout
  • Boarding pass or check-in confirmation

Step 2: Submit the form to WizzAir

Go to the WizzAir website and navigate to: Help → Passenger Rights → EC 261/2004 Claim Form. Complete the online form with all details from Step 1. Keep the ticket number you receive automatically after submission.

Step 3: Attach supporting documents

Where the form allows, include:

  • Booking confirmation scan with PNR
  • Screenshot of the departure board showing the delay
  • FlightAware or Flightradar24 report confirming the delay

Step 4: Wait for a response

WizzAir is legally required to respond within 14 business days. In practice, replies take 4–8 weeks, often longer. If you receive no reply after 6 weeks, send a follow-up or escalate your claim.

Why Does WizzAir Refuse Compensation?

Like many budget carriers, WizzAir frequently uses these tactics to avoid paying:

"Extraordinary circumstances" — the most common excuse. The airline may claim bad weather or an unrelated incident caused the delay. Check weather reports for that day — if conditions were normal, the argument is baseless.

"Technical failure" — WizzAir may cite an unexpected malfunction. However, the EU Court of Justice has repeatedly ruled that routine technical issues are part of an airline's operational risk and do not exempt the carrier from paying.

Formal errors in the claim — an incorrect IBAN, missing PNR, or inconsistent passenger data can lead to rejection. Accuracy when filling in the form is essential.

Ignoring the claim — some cases simply get lost in the system. No reply is not a refusal — it's a reason to escalate.

What to Do if WizzAir Rejects Your Claim

A rejection is not the end of the road. You have several options:

1. National Enforcement Body (NEB) — in your country, the relevant aviation authority can order WizzAir to pay. Filing is free, but the process takes 6–18 months.

2. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) — faster than the NEB, but requires WizzAir's agreement to participate.

3. AirHelp — the world's leading flight compensation company, having helped over 10 million passengers. They handle everything: claim submission, negotiations, and court action if needed. You pay 35% commission only if they win — no win, no fee.

4. Small claims court — you can file a claim yourself in your local court. Effective, but time-consuming.

FAQ: WizzAir Delayed Flight — Common Questions

Does WizzAir pay compensation without a fight? Unfortunately, no. WizzAir has a high rate of first-response refusals. Many claims are rejected or ignored, and passengers often need to escalate to the NEB or use a compensation company like AirHelp.

How long does it take to receive money from WizzAir? If WizzAir pays voluntarily — 6 to 12 weeks from submission. If the case goes to the NEB or a compensation firm — 3 to 12 months. Patience is key, or use professional help to speed things up.

Was my flight delayed by 2 hours — do I get compensation? No. The legal threshold is 3 hours of arrival delay. At 2 hours you do not qualify for financial compensation, though you are entitled to care (food, drinks) from the airline.

Does a technical failure mean WizzAir must pay? It depends on the type of failure. A hidden manufacturing defect (certified by the manufacturer) may exempt WizzAir. But routine operational technical issues — which account for the vast majority of cases — do not exempt the airline from paying. If in doubt, consult AirHelp or another compensation firm.

How far back can I claim WizzAir compensation? In most EU countries, you have 3 to 6 years to file a claim from the date of the flight. Don't wait — the sooner you file, the easier it is to gather evidence.
